The National Campus and Community Radio Conference (NCRC) is the annual national gathering of community-oriented radio broadcasters. It has been offered every summer since 1981, and is one of the association's core activities. Campus and community broadcasters are brought together with respected experts for panel discussions, seminars and workshops.
It is one of the few opportunities many broadcasters in the sector have to meet face-to-face. Workshops at the conference can include: programming, managment, starting a station, the CRTC, working with music labels, professional development, fundraising, equity and anti-oppression training, news production, audio art and more. There are also numerous social events providing opportunities for networking, idea sharing and fun.
The annual conference also plays host to the NCRA's Annual General Meeting, where members conduct the official business of the association. More information on our bylaws and resolutions can be found under the Governance section of this site.
This year the NCRC will be held on Gabriola Island, BC in June 2010, hosted by Gabriola Co-op Radio, a non-profit group that has worked for the last seven years to bring community radio to their island. More details to follow as June approaches. If you want to help out in some way, please contact shelley@ncra.ca.
The NCRA also encourages its member stations to host regional conferences.
The last regional conference was hosted by CFRC-FM in Kingston, Ontario from October 16-18, 2009. That station was the birthplace of campus radio in Canada and is also celebrating 50 years in the same location!
More than 110 people registered from 18 different stations. Sessions included workshops on writing for the ear, multitrack recorging, using Serato software to scratch and mix and discussions on third-language and cultural programming, grant-writing and campus and community stations working together.
The conference was featured in the Kingston Whig-Standard here: http://www.thewhig.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2135818
