CJLO IS HIRING A PROGRAM DIRECTOR!
CJLO 1690AM is a campus/community radio station based out of Concordia University’s Loyola campus located in NDG in Montréal, Québec. CJLO belongs to the not-for-profit corporation Concordia Student Broadcasting Corporation (CSBC) and represents Concordia University and its community. CJLO has been streaming online for over 20 years and in 2008, began broadcasting on 1690 AM throughout the Montreal area with 1000 watts of power. Currently running with a volunteer core of over 90 members, the station broadcasts a wide variety of musical and spoken word content. CJLO is an organization looking to take the next step in representing its community as a visible Montreal broadcaster.
CJLO is looking for a creative and enthusiastic Program Director to oversee our programming lineup and spearhead new programming initiatives for our station. As program director, your main goal is to facilitate and oversee the creation and quality of content in accordance with CJLO, CSBC, and Canadian Radio-Telecommunications Council (CRTC) guidelines.
Specifically, the Program Director will be responsible for training new DJs and volunteers on broadcasting equipment and broadcasting regulations, evaluating and critiquing existing shows, liaising with various community groups and organizations, and spearheading new and innovative programming initiatives.
In addition, the Program Director is also responsible for maintaining the health of our transmission signal and internal systems as it pertains to online streaming and broadcasting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
→ Maintain and oversee CJLO’s programming schedule and, when needed, build and modify the schedule with new shows, programming blocks, or initiatives
→ Oversee all on-air content which includes but is not limited to music, news, and production departments; oversee and supervise Head Music Director, News Director, and Production Director
→ Create, compile, and monitor on-air program logs to ensure programmer compliance with CRTC and internal programming regulations
→ Maintain SOCAN standards during reporting periods for on-air programming
→ Constantly review on-air programming quality, work with DJs and relevant grant-funded and/or short-term staff to improve their shows
→ Recruit, train, coordinate, and motivate programming volunteers
→ Ensure the maintenance of all equipment and internal systems
→ Represent CJLO and facilitate relationships to external parties including but not limited to the Concordia Student Union, the Concordia School of Journalism and other departments, student groups, clubs, and associations, and equity-seeking groups and organizations
→ Assisting the Station Manager in identifying and soliciting sponsorship and advertising opportunities for the station while building long-lasting relationships with festivals, record labels, and promotion and production companies
→ Overseeing and coordinating the production of on-air advertisements and public service announcements and scheduling on-air
advertisement rotation
→ Working alongside CJLO team members and DJs to ensure promotion of on-air programming
→ Maintain a knowledge of underground music scenes and key stakeholders, especially in Montreal
→ Participate in weekly staff meetings, monthly staff meetings, and attend the CJLO 1690AM Annual General Meeting
REQUIREMENTS
→ Previous experience in campus-community radio; knowledge of the CRTC, its policies, and various musical genres
→ Familiarity with CJLO 1690AM’s programming and mandate
→ Proficient in audio production; strong knowledge in digital audio workstations such as Audacity, Adobe Audition, Reaper, and/or ProTools
→ Computer skills: proficiency with basic office software, social networking (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Hootsuite), databases; Microsoft Office Suite, G Suite, Slack, Zoom
→ Professional history of successful project planning and execution
→ Strong planning and organizational skills; can meet deadlines with ease
→ Strong communication and interpersonal skills; can regularly provide constructive feedback to volunteers and staff
→ Strong volunteer management, team-building, and/or leadership skills
→ Strong ability to work independently and remain self-motivated
→ Strong ability to prioritize tasks; to set and achieve goals and deadlines
ASSETS
→ Knowledge of Concordia University and Montreal community
→ Knowledge of Montreal music community and underground music scenes across the country
→ Knowledge of radio and broadcasting equipment and its maintenance
→ Previous experience providing mentorship, editorial guidance, and support to improve storytelling projects
→ Fully bilingual in French and English
→ Previous experience working in the not-for-profit sector
→ Familiarity with networking and information technology

Type of Position: Contract, full-time, minimum 40 hours per week, renewable. Some flexibility with working hours.
Salary and Benefits: Annual salary $34,000-$44,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications. Health and Dental plan available.
Vacation: Four weeks paid vacation (includes two weeks off in December)
Location: In-person at CJLO 1690AM office (7040 Sherbrooke Ouest, CC-430), with some remote and/or on-location work. Candidates must be based or willing to relocate to Montréal, Québec.
