A delegation from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) was able to visit Unique FM in Ottawa on September 22, the only fully French-language community radio station in the nation’s capital.
An opportunity to reiterate the role and importance of our radio stations.
The CRTC delegation consisted of President and Chief Executive Officer Vicky Eatrides , Vice-President Broadcasting Nathalie Théberge , Strategic Policy Advisor Marie-Lyse Lavallée , Senior Broadcasting Executive Scott Shortliffe , Ontario Region Advisor Bram Abramson , and Vice-President Telecommunications Adam Scott .
From the community and campus radio sector, Louis Béland (Alliance Radios), François Désormeaux (Unique FM), Barry Rooke (NCRA) and Alex Freedman (Canadian Community and Campus Radio Fund) were present.
During the meeting, CRTC representatives were able to see the essential role that community and campus radio stations play in the Canadian media ecosystem.
The discussions also focused on the structural challenges of the sector, the good practices implemented by the stations, as well as the major contributions that these local media can make to the vitality of communities.
This visit is part of our sector’s ongoing efforts to maintain an open dialogue with the Canadian broadcasting and telecommunications regulator, and to reiterate the importance of public policies that support the social, cultural and local mission of community and campus radio stations like ours.
